The GC-606: A Journey Through One of the Most Challenging Roads in Gran Canaria

18/07/2024

Conquering the GC-606

Driving the GC-606 was undeniably one of the most thrilling experiences I've had on Gran Canaria. The combination of challenging driving conditions and stunning landscapes makes it an adventure you'll never forget.

My Experience on the GC-606

The GC-606 is not just any road; it's more of an experience. This mountain road is located in the western part of Gran Canaria, winding through rugged landscapes that seem almost untouched by time. The length might seem short, but what it lacks in distance, it more than makes up for in sheer thrill.

You can start your journey at Mogán, a charming town not far from the coast, you soon find yourself climbing steep inclines and navigating hairpin bends. The scenery is utterly captivating. One moment you're driving past lush greenery, and the next, the landscape opens up to breathtaking vistas of the Atlantic Ocean.

About halfway through, you'll reach a point where it feels like you've left modern civilization behind. Facilities are few and far between, so I suggest stocking up on essentials—water, snacks, and a full tank of gas—before you begin. There are a couple of small rest areas along the way that offer some incredible photo-ops. Trust me, you'll want to capture those moments.

Highlights You Can't Miss

One of the highlights on this route is the Roque Nublo, a towering volcanic rock that stands as a natural monument. If time allows, consider making a stop and taking a short hike to fully appreciate its grandeur. Another must-see is the Mirador de la Aldea, an overlook that provides panoramic views of the entire valley below. The view was absolutely worth the few minutes I spent soaking it all in.

Practical Tips

  • Getting There: The most convenient way to access the GC-606 is by renting a car from Las Palmas, the island's capital. Follow the GC-1 and then the GC-200 to reach Mogán. From Mogán, take the GC-606 towards La Aldea de San Nicolás.
  • Public Transport: Public transport options are limited and not recommended if you want to get the most out of this experience.
  • Nearby Highlights: Once you've braved the GC-606, spend some time iLa Aldea de San Nicolásn . It's a quaint village that offers a more relaxed vibe after your challenging drive. You can also venture to Puerto de Mogán, often referred to as "Little Venice" due to its picturesque canals and serene atmosphere.
