The Gran Canaria Highway 2 : Your Gateway to Gran Canaria's north

18/07/2024

I'm taking you on a ride along the GC-2 highway, which hugs the northern coastline of this amazing island. It's more than just a road; it's a scenic journey that leads to some incredible, lesser-known beaches. Let me share my personal adventure and give you some juicy details to make your trip unforgettable.

The GC-2 Highway: The Essentials

The GC-2 is the main freeway that runs along the northern coast of Gran Canaria, connecting the capital city of Las Palmas to the quaint town of Agaete. This highway is not just a means to an end; it's a view-packed adventure that's worth every mile.

> Starting Point – Las Palmas

I started my journey from Las Palmas, at the very beginning of the GC-2. If you're driving, just follow the signs for Agaete, and you'll be on your way.

> Distance Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Agaete:

The distance from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Agaete is approximately 35 kilometers (about 22 miles).

> Travel Time

By car, the drive typically takes around 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the traffic and your actual starting and ending points within the cities. It's a fairly straightforward journey, mostly along the GC-2 highway, which hugs the northern coast of the island. The scenic route provides an enjoyable drive with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

> Public Transport

If you prefer taking public transportation, there are regular bus services between Las Palmas and Agaete. The number 103 bus is a popular choice and the journey takes approximately one hour. The bus service is reliable and offers a comfortable ride, so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the stunning landscapes.

Planning to hit the open road on Gran Canaria?

The island's highways are a pleasure to drive, especially with those stunning coastal and mountain views. But before you get behind the wheel, let's go over some essential driving rules on Gran Canaria's highways to help you stay safe and sound.

Driving on the Right

Just like in the rest of Spain, you'll be driving on the right side of the road in Gran Canaria. If you're from a country where you drive on the left, this might take a little getting used to, but you'll quickly find your groove.

Speed Limits

Speed limits on the island vary depending on the type of road you're on:

  • Highways (Autovías): The speed limit is generally 120 km/h (around 75 mph).
  • Secondary Roads: Speed limits usually range from 90 km/h to 100 km/h (56 to 62 mph).
  • Urban Areas: Typically, the speed limit is 50 km/h (31 mph), but it can drop to 30 km/h (19 mph) in residential areas or near schools.

Seat Belts

Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, both in the front and back seats. This is a strict rule, so always buckle up!

Alcohol Limits

The legal blood alcohol limit in Spain is 0.05%. For new drivers (those who have had their license for less than two years), the limit is even lower at 0.03%. It's best to abstain altogether if you'll be driving.

Mobile Phones

Using a mobile phone while driving is illegal unless you have a hands-free system. Even fiddling with your phone at a stoplight can get you in trouble, so keep it stashed until you're parked.

Child Safety Seats

Children under 135 cm (about 4 feet 5 inches) must use an appropriate child safety seat. Depending on their age and size, this could be a rear-facing seat, booster seat, or a seat with a harness.

Toll Roads

Good news! Gran Canaria's highways are toll-free, so you can journey around the island without worrying about extra costs.

Emergency Number

For any emergencies, the number to call is 112. This is the universal emergency number and will connect you to police, fire, or medical services.
