Stunning Views at El Balcón Viewpoint in Gran Canaria

18/07/2024

My trip to El Balcón Viewpoint was one of those soul-enriching experiences that make you fall in love with nature all over again. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a photography lover, or someone who just loves a good view, this spot is the place to be.

The Drive to El Balcón

First things first, getting there is half the fun. El Balcón is perched on the rugged coastline of the west of Gran Canaria, near the cozy town of La Aldea de San Nicolás. If you're driving from Las Palmas, it's about an hour and a half drive via the GC-200 road. From Maspalomas, it's around the same time, but you'll take the GC-1 and then switch to the scenic GC-200.

Pro Tip: The GC-200 road is winding and narrow in spots, so take it slow and savor the incredible coastal views. And hey, if driving's not your thing, there are public buses that can get you there too. The Global bus service from Las Palmas or Maspalomas is your best bet; just check the schedules in advance.

The Viewpoint El Balcón

As you approach El Balcón, you'll already begin to notice how the rugged cliffs and the roaring Atlantic Ocean create a dramatic landscape that's immensely breathtaking. And then, BAM! You arrive at the viewpoint, and it's like stepping into a whole new world.

El Balcón Viewpoint is a perfectly situated perch that offers panoramic views of the "Dragon's Tail": the unique coastline shaped like the spine of a dragon. Waves crash against the cliffs, creating a mesmerizing symphony of natural sounds that simply enhance the awe-inspiring visuals. Trust me, you'll want to spend more than a few moments just soaking it all in.

Practical Tips

  • Parking: There's a designated parking area right by the viewpoint, and it's free. Easy peasy!
  • Facilities: There aren't any facilities directly at the viewpoint, so make sure to bring some water and maybe pack a little snack. The nearest restrooms are in La Aldea de San Nicolás.
  • Best Time to Visit: Morning or late afternoon is perfect, not only to avoid the midday heat but also to catch the most stunning natural light - great for those Instagram shots!

Nearby Highlights

Don't rush off just yet; there's plenty more to explore nearby!

  • Andén Verde: Another spectacular viewpoint where you can marvel at the island's rugged beauty, only a stone's throw from El Balcón.
