My Journey to Gui Gui Beach

Gui Gui Beach, or as some locals spell it, Güigüi, is located on the wild west coast of Gran Canaria. It's about as off-the-beaten-path as you can get on this island. My adventure began early in the morning from Las Palmas, where I rented a car since public transport doesn't directly get you to the starting point.

After about a two-hour drive heading west, I arrived in the small village of Tasartico. This is where the real fun starts: a hiking trail to the beach! The hike is approximately 5-6 kilometers. It's moderately challenging, taking around two hours one way, depending on your pace and fitness level. Remember to pack plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection because there are no facilities along the way or on the beach itself. Trust me, though; the trek is worth the effort.

The Beach Itself

Reaching Gui Gui Beach feels like discovering a forgotten world. The beach stretches about 800 meters of golden sands, framed by rugged cliffs that seem to rise from the ocean itself. The waves gently lap the shore, creating a serene soundtrack to your time there. On the southern end of the beach, you'll notice the fascinating natural rock formations and edges carved by years of oceanic activity.

One of the highlights here is the sense of seclusion and tranquility. Unlike the more popular beaches in Gran Canaria, Gui Gui remains relatively untouched by the throngs of tourists. You can genuinely feel like you're on a private island. During my visit, there were only a handful of other visitors, making it an intimate experience.

Practical Information and Tips

Location: As mentioned, the beach is closest to the village of Tasartico in the west of Gran Canaria. There are no direct public transport routes, so driving or possibly arranging a taxi is your best bet.

Facilities: There are no facilities at Gui Gui Beach; no restaurants, no restrooms, nothing. It's part of what makes this place feel so untouched. Make sure to bring everything you need for the day in a backpack.

Hiking: The hike can be tough under the midday sun. Start early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day. The trail is marked but bring a map or GPS as backup.

Nearby Highlights: If you have extra time, consider exploring the nearby village of La Aldea de San Nicolás. It's a quaint village where you can grab a bite to eat and explore local shops. Additionally, the Mirador del Balcón offers stunning cliffside views just a short drive away from Tasartico.
