Cenobio de Valerón: A Spectacular Ancient fortress
Hello, history enthusiasts and curious travelers! It's your go-to Gran Canaria guide here, ready to take you back in time to one of the island's most extraordinary archaeological marvels – the Cenobio de Valerón. Located on the steep slopes of Montaña del Gallego, this ancient granary is a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the island's early inhabitants. Let's explore why this site should be on your must-visit list!
The Ingenious Ancient Granary
Dating back more than 800 years, the Cenobio de Valerón was ingeniously carved by the native Canarians using stone picks. Over 350 cavities are distributed across multiple levels, strategically designed for the storage of cereals and other essential food supplies.
The geological structure of the volcanic cone provided the perfect conditions for creating this extensive granary, which highlights the ingenious use of natural landscapes by ancient societies.
A Natural Fortress
Perched on an almost vertical cliff, the Cenobio de Valerón exudes an aura of a natural fortress. The site's strategic location made it virtually invisible from the outside, offering protection and security for its precious stores. The term "cenobio" stems from an outdated and incorrect belief that the site was once a convent for young noblewomen. Today, however, we understand it as an advanced communal granary.
Unforgettable Views and Experiences
Visitors will be mesmerized by the panoramic views of the surrounding ravines and the impressive sight of the granary's caves. A visit to the Cenobio de Valerón is both educational and awe-inspiring, offering a deeper understanding of the ancient Canarians. Guided circuits with informative panels, models, and recreations are available, bringing history to life.
