Exploring Gran Canaria

The Gran Canaria World Trail Majors

Participating in the Gran Canaria World Trail Majors is an extraordinary adventure that combined my passion for running with the stunning landscapes and rich culture of Gran Canaria. Known for bringing together some of the world's best trail and ultra races, the event offers an array of experiences tailored for both amateur and professional runners.

Covering diverse terrains that span lush forests, rugged mountains, and arid deserts, each race in the Gran Canaria World Trail Majors is a journey of physical and mental endurance. From the formidable 126KM Classic to the exhilarating 12KM Promo, the trails challenge runners while rewarding them with breathtaking views and a profound sense of accomplishment.

More than a race, it's a cultural immersion into the "continent in miniature," as the island is affectionately known. My participation in this event was both humbling and uplifting, a testament to the unyielding spirit of trail running.

Runners gathered nervously at the start, eager to embrace Gran Canaria's unique and challenging trails. Equipped and determined, they embarked on the race, greeted by the enthusiastic support of volunteers. The demanding terrains of Los Giles and Barranco de Tenoya tested their limits, but the island's stunning scenery and the camaraderie of fellow participants provided motivation. Notable athletes like Raúl and renowned American runners pushed through tough moments, cheered on by the crowd. Ultimately, Gran Canaria offered more than just a race; it was an enriching experience that celebrated endurance, community, and the island's diverse landscapes.

You can choose among the follwing races and experience one of the most exciting challenge in the world: --->

1. La Transgrancanaria Classic - 126KM of Sheer Determination

I signed up for the La Transgrancanaria Classic, a whopping 126 kilometers with nearly 7,000 meters of elevation gain. This race is not for the faint-hearted. It is an experience that pushes both your physical and psychological limits. Starting in the early hours, I felt a wave of emotions as the dawn broke over the stunning landscapes of Gran Canaria. The terrain transitioned from lush valleys to rugged mountainous trails, each section presenting its own challenges and rewards.

The support along the way was incredible. From fellow runners encouraging each other to the local volunteers offering refreshments, it felt like one big community driven by a shared goal. After 20 grueling hours, arriving in Maspalomas felt surreal—like crossing the finish line of a lifelong dream.

2. A Glimpse of Gran Canaria Through the Transgrancanaria Advanced - 82KM

For those seeking a shorter yet equally challenging option, the Transgrancanaria Advanced at 82 kilometers is a splendid choice. Beginning in the picturesque village of Teror, the race takes you through the heart of Gran Canaria, showcasing its diverse landscapes. The route features the lush Parque Rural del Nublo and the striking Caldera de Tejeda. The trail then meanders through Artenara and Tejeda before transitioning into the arid southern part of the island. This "continent in miniature" offers a whirlwind tour of what makes Gran Canaria so unique.

3. Transgrancanaria Marathon - 47KM of Speed and Beauty

The Transgrancanaria Marathon is a race characterized by its speed and beautiful yet challenging trail. Starting from Tejeda, runners ascend to the highest point of the island before tackling a technical descent, passing by incredible spots such as the Camino de La Plata. The route features aid stations in Tunte and Ayagaures, providing well-needed breaks before the final push to Maspalomas. This marathon enriches both body and soul, making it a memorable experience for any participant.

4. Transgrancanaria Half - 21KM

The Transgrancanaria Half offers a condensed yet spectacular experience. It starts in Tunte and guides runners through the scenic Camino de La Plata. The fun descent winds through La Culata and Tejeda, ending with a stunning view of the island. Despite its shorter distance, it remains one of the most breathtaking races in the Canary Islands.

5. Family and Youth Trails - Fun for All Ages

The Transgrancanaria event also includes the Family Trail and Transgrancanaria Youth, making it a family-friendly affair. This year's Family Trail was held in Teror, an ideal setting for parents and children to share an unforgettable experience.

The Youth race, moved to Teror this year, featured distances of 5 and 9 kilometers, offering young runners a taste of the adventure. The race started and ended at the emblematic basilica of Villa Mariana, making it a truly unique event for young athletes.

6. Kilómetro Vertical El Gigante - For the Brave

Lastly, for those seeking to test their limits, the Kilómetro Vertical El Gigante offers a formidable challenge. Running up the sheer wall of the Tamadaba massif, with 1,130 meters of elevation gain over just 5.5 kilometers, is a true testament to one's physical and mental strength.
