Playa de San Augustin
San Ausgustin Beach in Gran Canaria - A beach for families and those seeking peace and quiet
On my trip to Gran Canaria, I discovered the quiet yet well-equipped beach of San Agustín. Located in the south of the island, this beach offers just the right balance between tourist amenities and soothing tranquility. Unlike the busier beaches in the region, San Agustín remains calm and manageable, even in high season.
The beach itself stretches for more than 600 meters and is covered with light, fine sand. The waters are calm, which makes it particularly family-friendly. I could see parents playing with their children on the shore and enjoying the moderate waves. The proximity to one of the largest thalassotherapy centers on the island is another plus point if you are looking for additional relaxation options during your stay.
A highlight is the long beach promenade that connects San Agustín with Playa del Inglés. This route is perfect for leisurely strolls past numerous terraces, bars and restaurants. Here I was able to try various culinary delicacies, which are a wonderful addition to a day at the beach. Conveniently, there are also showers, sun loungers and umbrellas to rent on the beach. Free parking and good connections to the Maspalomas bus network make access uncomplicated.
A retreat for returnees
While walking along the beach, I noticed that the mix of locals and tourists creates a pleasant atmosphere. The lifeguards on duty also provide a sense of security, especially when families with small children are out and about.
One of the special charms of San Agustín is the peaceful atmosphere that dominates here. Unlike the more crowded beaches of the island, where jet skis and loud music rule the roar, time seems to pass more slowly here. People seem to consciously seek peace, perhaps knowing that this kind of serenity is hard to find elsewhere on the island.
I noticed that the black volcanic sand of the beach is particularly fine, which creates a pleasant contrast to the often rocky shores of other beaches. Although you can occasionally feel larger, rounded stones in the water, this did not spoil my bathing fun. The water quality is good, even if algae are occasionally washed up by the current. Here, too, the waves are often a little higher, but this does not detract from the fun of bathing.
To end the day perfectly, many visitors took the opportunity to stroll along the promenade and enjoy the fresh sea breeze. Whether locals are winding down after work or tourists are catching the last rays of sunshine of the day - San Agustín beach has something for everyone.
San Agustín has personally shown me that you don't always have to follow the busiest and most famous places to experience the beauty of an island. Sometimes it's the smaller, quieter spots like this one that offer you a deep insight into the local culture and an unforgettable travel experience.
